Is Deep TMS (dTMS) Right for You?
Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) with BrainsWay is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Unlike medications, dTMS works directly on the neural circuits associated with depression and other conditions, without causing systemic side effects such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or sedation. Treatment is performed in our office, requires no anesthesia, and you can drive yourself to and from each session.
dTMS is most commonly used for major depressive disorder, especially when symptoms have not improved after trying antidepressant medications. Many individuals consider dTMS if they have tried two or more medications without adequate relief, experienced intolerable side effects from medications, or prefer a non-medication treatment option.
You may want to consider a consultation if you continue to struggle with depression despite medication trials, cannot tolerate antidepressant side effects, feel that symptoms are interfering with work or relationships, or are looking for a non-invasive, evidence-based alternative or add-on to medication. Many patients begin noticing improvement within the first several weeks of treatment.
Treatment typically consists of sessions five days per week over several weeks. Each session lasts about 20 minutes, during which magnetic pulses gently stimulate targeted brain circuits associated with depression. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort or headache during or shortly after treatment, which usually improve over time. Serious adverse events are rare.
For individuals who continue to struggle despite medication trials, dTMS offers a medication-free, evidence-based option that works by directly targeting the neural circuits involved in depression. At Sandia Vista Psychiatric-Mental Health, we are proud to offer BrainsWay dTMS as part of our commitment to providing innovative, compassionate, and personalized care for our patients.
